Want to learn deepthroating? Discover techniques, positions, breathing tips, throat training, and safety practices to make it easier and more enjoyable.

Summary:

Deepthroating is an oral sex technique in which a penis penetrates beyond the mouth and toward the throat. Learning how to deepthroat involves understanding your gag reflex, managing your breathing, relaxing your jaw, experimenting with comfortable positions, and gradually becoming familiar with deeper oral stimulation. Unlike face fucking or throat fucking, deepthroating typically puts the giver in control of the depth, pace, and movement. Although some people enjoy the physical sensations, much of deepthroating's appeal comes from the psychological experience of desire, submission, and sexual enthusiasm. Successful deepthroating isn't about how deeply or how long someone can take a cock, but about creating an enjoyable, consensual experience while respecting physical limits and safety.
deepthroat

You’ve probably seen someone in porn, or even in real life, swallow a cock all the way down to the base like it’s the easiest thing in the world. But if you’ve ever tried it yourself, you know it’s not as easy as it seems.

When you try to do it, you feel awkward. You gag. You choke. You feel like your body is fighting you. And instead of feeling sexy, you’re thinking, “Oh God, am I doing this wrong?”

Here’s the thing: Deepthroating isn’t about having a porn star throat. It’s about learning how to relax, how to use your body effectively, and how to own the act so it feels just as hot for you as it does for them. And the best part? It’s a skill that can be developed with practice.

So let’s look at some practical techniques for learning how to deepthroat that are both easy to learn and hot to perform.

What Is Deepthroating?

During a blowjob (aka fellatio), the lips, tongue, and mouth work together to create rhythm, warmth, and suction around the cock. Deepthroating takes this a step further by allowing the shaft to move deeper toward the oropharynx (the middle part of the throat behind the tongue and soft palate).

When your throat relaxes and your gag reflex softens, the cock can move deeper into this space.

Blowjob vs. Deepthroating vs. Face Fucking vs. Throat Fucking

Let’s first distinguish between a blowjob, deepthroating, face fucking, and throat fucking. While all of these involve oral sex, the differences come down to who is in control and how deeply the penis penetrates the other person’s mouth.

A blowjob is an oral sex act that the penis-haver has done to them—the other person gives pleasure, and the penis-haver receives it. The other person is mostly in control of the movement and depth of their actions, while the penis-haver is just enjoying the show. A blowjob can be calm, wet, or sloppy, include hand strokes, and involve a bit of gagging and teasing.

Deepthroating is just like a blowjob in that it’s an oral sex act the penis-haver has done to them, and the other person is in control of the movement. The difference is that the other person is now pushing the cock toward the back of their mouth and into their throat, attempting to take it all in.

Face fucking is an aggressive oral sex act that the penis-haver does to the other person—the penis-haver is taking pleasure for themselves, and the other person is allowing it to happen. The penis-haver is in control of the thrusting and depth of penetration, and the other person’s mouth is being used. Face fucking is typically neither calm nor gentle, generally doesn’t involve any hand action, and will likely involve gagging. The key distinction is that the penis only penetrates the mouth without pushing toward the back of the throat.

Throat fucking is just like face fucking in that it’s an aggressive oral sex act that the penis-haver does to the other person. The difference is that the penis now penetrates fully into the other person’s mouth and extends into their throat.

What we’ll discuss today is how to deepthroat, putting control of the movement into the hands (or rather, mouth) of the other person.

Why Do People Enjoy Deepthroating?

As with most sexual acts, there are both physical and psychological components to the enjoyment.

Physically, the person being deepthroated gets to experience the sensation of being completely engulfed, along with the involuntary throat contractions that occur during gagging. For some, these unique sensations are incredibly pleasurable.

Personally, I enjoy the sensations and stimulation of a blowjob more than deepthroating. That said, the psychological components are what still make deepthroating so hot to receive. Seeing someone passionately sacrificing their own oxygen supply for my pleasure makes me feel incredibly desired. It’s like they’re saying, “I need you so much right now that I must take you inside me entirely.” And who doesn’t want to be desired that much? The messier and more unhinged they become, the more it starts pressing those degradation and sexual objectification buttons, which is beautiful to witness.

For the giver, deepthroating may also be physically enjoyable. While it might sound like a myth, some people report experiencing "throat orgasms," or climax-like sensations from deep throat stimulation. However, the physiological mechanisms behind these experiences aren't well understood.

One possible explanation involves the vagus nerve, which originates in the brainstem and travels down the neck, providing sensory and motor connections to structures in the throat before continuing to organs in the chest and abdomen.

During deepthroating, pressure against sensitive structures in the back of the throat may stimulate nerve endings, including those associated with the vagus nerve. Some researchers have proposed that vagal stimulation may contribute to certain unusual pleasurable sensations, although there isn't sufficient evidence to establish that deepthroating can directly trigger orgasms through this pathway.

Some people who report throat orgasms describe sensations that originate in the back of the mouth and ripple throughout the body, sometimes accompanied by involuntary pelvic floor contractions.

But even if you're not one of the lucky ones who experiences these sensations, you may still find deepthroating psychologically enjoyable.

Perhaps you enjoy giving cock worship and being of service, helpful, or caring to your person. You may enjoy the degrading elements of it or the sense of pride that comes from knowing this is your role in the dynamic. You may enjoy the discomfort that comes with prolonged stimulation in the throat or the satisfaction of overcoming the challenge. Or perhaps you enjoy being the one in control, going at your own pace while they're just along for the ride.

How to Deepthroat

Let’s look at the risks, techniques, positions, and training involved so you can learn to deepthroat like a champ.

Risks

Nothing is ever risk-free. Do your proper risk management and know what you’re willing to do.

Here are some risks you should be aware of:

  • STIs: Chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, syphilis, HPV, HIV, hepatitis, and trichomoniasis can all potentially be transmitted through oral sex, although the likelihood varies significantly by infection. Some are more likely to infect the throat than others, while HIV transmission through oral sex is extremely rare. Do your due diligence by getting tested, sharing STI results, and understanding that routine STI screenings don't necessarily include throat swabs or tests for every infection.
  • Pain: Without proper preparation and a gradual approach, pushing a cock that far into your mouth can be painful. Start slowly and shallowly, giving yourself time to relax. If you experience significant pain or discomfort, stop before you injure your mouth, throat, or jaw.
  • Dislocated Jaw: You’d need some serious force and an unfortunate angle for this to happen, but it’s not impossible. What’s more likely is experiencing significant jaw soreness if you’re not used to keeping your mouth open for extended periods. This is particularly important for those who suffer from temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which involve pain and dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and surrounding muscles.
  • Overactive Gag Reflex: Some people have a particularly sensitive gag reflex. No matter how much effort they put into reducing its sensitivity, it may remain highly reactive to even the slightest stimulation. An overactive gag reflex can make giving a regular blowjob difficult without gagging.
  • Vomiting: Repeatedly triggering your gag reflex can lead to vomiting. While some people enjoy incorporating this into sexual play, vomiting carries risks, including aspiration, which occurs when vomit enters the airway. It's not necessarily painless or harmless, so don't deliberately induce vomiting as part of throat training.
  • Choking: Your gag reflex is one of the protective mechanisms that helps prevent choking, but it doesn't guarantee that your airway will remain clear. Deepthroating can interfere with your ability to breathe, particularly if the penis obstructs your airway. Be mindful of your breathing, take frequent breaks, and never push yourself to the point of breathlessness or panic.

Throat Training

Just like with anal, deepthroating is something you can gradually work toward, which is why throat training is often a common assignment given to submissives.

The goal of throat training is to become more comfortable with sensations toward the back of your mouth, learn to manage your gag reflex, and develop greater awareness of your body's limits.

Start wherever you feel most comfortable. If you're brand new to this, you may want to begin by becoming familiar with your gag reflex before attempting deeper penetration with a partner. Some people experiment with fingers or oral-safe dildos.

The benefit of practicing on your own is that you can control the pacing and depth without fear of embarrassment while learning something new. Any toy you use should be clean, body-safe, and designed to prevent accidental swallowing or choking.

Throat Training Steps:

  1. Place the object in your mouth and slowly edge towards the back of your throat.
  2. Push it until the point it starts to trigger your gag reflex. When this happens, stop moving and consciously try to suppress your gag reflex and hold it there.
  3. You now need to maintain your breathing through your nose while at the same time concentrating on relaxing your throat.
  4. Hold the object steady at the back of your throat for up to 10 seconds. Don’t try to move it in or out.
  5. If it gets too uncomfortable, or you feel like you’re about to throw up, take it out and take deep breaths. Once your heartbeat has slowed down, and your gag reflex has relaxed, have another go.

You can make this a regular practice, allowing yourself to become more familiar with the sensations over time. Rather than forcing yourself to gag or pushing progressively deeper with every session, focus on staying relaxed and recognizing your limits.

With practice, some people find that they become more comfortable with deeper oral stimulation and better able to anticipate their gag reflex. However, there's no guarantee that your gag reflex will become less sensitive, and trying to suppress it aggressively can increase your risk of injury.

Once you're comfortable, you can try incorporating what you've learned with your person. The same principles apply: Start shallowly, control the depth and pace, and stop whenever you need to. Over time, you may become more comfortable with their length and girth.

As mentioned earlier, some people have a particularly sensitive gag reflex. If you're one of those people, don't worry. It's not the end of the world. Deepthroating might simply not be for you, and there are plenty of other fun ways to use your mouth. I recommend exploring cockwarming!

Positions

When it comes to deepthroating, not all blowjob positions are created equal. The key is choosing one where your mouth and throat are in alignment. If you have ever seen a sword swallowing performance, this is exactly what they are doing – creating a straight passageway from mouth to throat so the sword goes in.

One position I've used when introducing someone to deepthroating is having them lie on their back with their head near the edge of the bed.

If you experiment with this position, make sure your head and neck remain comfortably supported rather than hanging unsupported or being forced into extreme extension.

The penis-haver can stand beside the bed so their cock is level with your mouth. You can also bend your knees to help stabilize yourself.

From here, you take control of the depth and pace. It can be helpful to keep one hand around the base of the cock to guide its movement and prevent it from going deeper than you're comfortable with. Gradually explore what feels manageable without forcing yourself to take its full length.

With your other hand, you can rest it on the front or back of their thigh. Before starting, agree on a nonverbal safety signal, such as double-tapping their thigh, that means they must immediately stop and withdraw. Because you may not be able to speak, your partner needs to remain attentive and respond immediately to that signal.

One of the reasons I enjoy this position is that the other person has access to the rest of your body and can play with you while you deepthroat them.

Once you’ve gained good control of your gag reflex, you can essentially switch to any other blowjob position and turn it into deep throating by pushing the cock further in.

Techniques

Once you have the basics down, there are several tips and techniques that can make deepthroating easier and more enjoyable.

Breathing

After becoming more comfortable with your gag reflex, learning to manage your breathing during deepthroating will be your next challenge.

Try breathing through your nose when your airway is unobstructed. One way to find a natural breathing rhythm is to imagine that you're breathing your partner in. As you take them into your mouth, breathe gently through your nose. As you pull back, exhale.

In the beginning, focus on short, controlled movements, no more than a few seconds. When you feel your gag reflex start to stir, pause there, breathe, and wait for it to pass before slowly withdrawing. Repeating this pattern helps your body learn how to stay relaxed and synced with each movement.

You may only be able to manage deeper penetration for a split second before pulling your head back. You might also find it difficult to breathe at all while they're that deep.

If that's the case, pull back and take breaks as often as you need. Don't think you have to keep them buried down your throat the whole time. Pull off. Spit. Stroke them with your hand while you lick the tip. Look up at them with wet lips and messy hair.

I know for me, the hottest part isn't you deepthroating nonstop. It's how you look after you've just done it, dripping and catching your breath, before going back for more.

Relax Your Jaw and Soften Your Throat

The more tension you're carrying in your jaw or throat, the harder it will be to remain comfortable, and the more sensitive your gag reflex may feel.

One trick is to hum (or moan!) while their cock slides into your throat. The vibrations will relax the throat muscles. You might also consider jaw stretches, a warm compress, or some hot tea beforehand to help everything relax.

You can also experiment with wrapping your lips around your teeth – and using lots of saliva – to see if it helps with not having to open your mouth as wide.

Using Your Tongue

If you push your tongue forward as you push the cock deeper, it can give your throat more space and take off some pressure. The added benefit is when their cock is fully in, you can lick their balls depending on the position.

Using Your Hands

Like any physical act, stamina takes time to develop. If your jaw or throat gets tired, use a hand–mouth combination to give the illusion of depth. Alternate between mouth and hand strokes to rest your muscles while keeping the rhythm going.

You can also place your hands on their legs or stomach to help control the speed and depth of penetration.

Using Your Throat

If you have significant awareness of your gag reflex, you may notice how throat contractions affect the sensations your partner experiences.

When you gag, your throat naturally tightens as your pharyngeal muscles contract. These contractions can be uncomfortable for you, but your partner may find the resulting sensations pleasurable.

However, deliberately triggering gagging or trying to control these involuntary spasms can increase the risk of choking, vomiting, or injury, so discuss with your partner if this is something you want to attempt.

Wetter Is Better

When you start deepthroating, you're probably going to notice that you're producing large quantities of saliva. This is a natural response, and all that saliva provides lubrication that can help everything move more smoothly.

But more importantly, it's hot!

Don't be afraid of the mess. You will not look "cute" at any point in this process, so don't even try. You'll have drool running down your face (and your chest, too, if you're going for gold).

Spit on it. Let drool drip onto your chest. Pull off with a gasp, wipe your mouth, and go back down. Those little breaks and all that messy wetness make the whole thing feel raw and dirty in the best way.

If you struggle to produce enough saliva or just want to make things extra wet and messy, you can experiment with saliva-stimulating products beforehand. Flint Mints and other saliva-producing candies are one option, but make sure they're completely dissolved or removed from your mouth before oral sex to avoid a choking hazard.

Eye Contact

Eye contact can turn up the eroticism of oral sex tenfold. Don't be afraid to let your eyes meet theirs. Your eyes might tear up. Your makeup might run. Embrace it.

Finishing

If you take the deep throating to the point of ejaculation, they can easily finish by cumming down your throat, which bypasses the taste buds if you don’t enjoy the taste.

Nonverbal Safe Signals

It's going to be pretty difficult to use a safeword if things get too intense when your mouth is a little occupied.

Before starting, agree on a nonverbal safety signal that means your partner must stop and withdraw immediately.

When you need a break, you can use your hands to push back against your partner or signal for them to stop. You could use a double tap on their leg or any other signal that works well for both of you.

Just make sure your partner understands the signal, remains attentive, and knows to stop immediately when you use it. You should also be able to withdraw on your own whenever you need to.

Tips for the Receiver

For the person receiving the deepthroating, here are a few things that will help both of you:

  • Let them control the movement: Deepthroating puts control of pacing, depth, and intensity in their hands. This is crucial in the beginning because they need to relax and become comfortable with your cock. Don't force them to take more than they're able or willing to handle, as doing so could seriously hurt them (and violate their consent). Once they've become comfortable with deeper oral stimulation, you can discuss exploring face fucking if that's something you're both interested in.
  • Pleasure them: This isn't something I'd recommend while they're still learning, as it may distract them or cause involuntary contractions. But as they become more comfortable, consider giving them pleasure while they deepthroat you. The head-near-the-edge-of-the-bed position can be useful for this because you have access to their chest and pelvic area. Just make sure they remain comfortable and able to control the depth and movement.
  • Praise them: They're working hard to please you and give you a show, all while possibly having doubts about their performance or how they look at that moment. Let them know how sexy they look, how much they're turning you on, or how good it feels. The more energy and authenticity you put behind your praise, the more likely they'll be to continue doing it with passion.

It's the Show, Not the Swallow

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when learning to deepthroat is thinking that the goal is to take an entire cock down your throat and keep it there as long as possible.

Sure, that's impressive. But it's not necessarily what makes deepthroating so hot.

Much of the eroticism comes from the psychological experience. The eagerness to take all of them. The messy, unrestrained enthusiasm. The feeling of being so desired that someone wants every inch of you inside them.

And that doesn't require you to keep a cock buried in your throat for minutes at a time. Sometimes, a few seconds of deepthroating, followed by a sloppy blowjob and a look that says, I want more, can be far more arousing than any feat of endurance.

So focus less on how long you can hold it and more on the experience you're creating.

Because at the end of the day, the hottest part of deepthroating isn't necessarily how much cock you can take. It's how much you make them feel wanted.
