Today, I want to teach you something different.
Something that I think is more important and valuable than any other skill I've written about because learning this one skill unlocks all the others—not just in kink, but in life.
It's the skill that has helped me accomplish things regardless of my circumstances.
That skill is metalearning, or "learning how to learn": the process of understanding how you acquire knowledge rather than simply studying a subject itself.
Screeeeech.
Learning? Boring. I don't want to learn that. Brandon, just teach me how to give someone 15 orgasms. (Hint: use a Magic Wand. Problem solved.)
Look, I get it. School probably beat the love of learning out of you by forcing you to study a lot of things that were never genuinely interesting, failing to show you why they mattered, and then failing again to show you how to use that knowledge to solve real problems in your life.
That's not the kind of learning I'm talking about.
What I want to show you is how to identify a problem, a goal, or a genuine interest—something that could dramatically improve your life if it came to fruition—and then learn the skills you need to make it a reality.
It's a really simple formula:
Desire → Skills needed to make that desire real → Application of those skills → Real outcomes
With that process, you can learn countless skills in kink, any of which could help you give someone 15 orgasms, become a better Dominant or submissive, build a more fulfilling relationship, and so much more. Not with magic stardust, but with real learning techniques rooted in cognitive science.
Let's take a step back for a second. If you're reading my content, you're probably interested in power to some degree. Even if you're submissive-leaning and say you don't want power, I would argue that you do—because how could you give away something you never really had in the first place?
At its core, power is the ability to act freely—to do what you want, when you want, and how you want, without external forces dictating your choices. It is the capacity to transform an idea in your mind into reality with minimal restriction or interference.
When I was younger, I was poor. Like standing in line at the food bank for Thanksgiving dinner poor. One thing you realize when you don't have money to solve the inevitable problems life throws at you is that you're going to have to learn how to solve those problems yourself. And if you don't know how to do that, you have to go learn.
When you start doing that, though, you gain a small spark of inspiration. You begin to recognize a pattern:
Problem arises → I learn the skills to solve it → The problem gets solved.
Your learning, when applied, has a direct and immediate benefit.
It creates a lot of self-confidence and a sense of power, even in a world where you don't have much power. Even the things we typically associate with power—resources, money, status, or what have you—can be acquired by learning the skills to obtain them. Those resources aren't the real power. The ability to learn how to acquire them is.
Learning is the greatest source of power I have ever found. At any given time, I'm probably reading a couple of books, taking a few courses, participating in some sort of coaching program, watching videos, or digging through websites on niche topics. While I'm consuming those resources, I'm repeatedly asking myself, How do I apply this? How does this solve a problem?
Of course, I recognize that I'm in a more privileged position to have access to these kinds of resources. That's why, in every endeavor I've pursued, I've tried to make education as accessible as possible, with as few barriers as I can and the highest possible return on investment for improving another person's life.
If you're a Dominant, having the ability to learn how to solve virtually any problem—or create a life that fulfills your desires or your submissive's—creates authentic power rooted in reality, not fantasy. It says, If you submit to me, real things will happen in your life.
If you're a submissive, having that same ability is what allows you to truly choose submission rather than fawning into it. It helps keep you safe because you're better equipped to assess the risks of giving your power to someone else. It also makes you more valuable to your Dominant because Dom/sub relationships are a team sport, just with an uneven distribution of power. Submissives are not powerless; they choose to share that power with someone else.
Consider your own goals or challenges in kink for a moment.
I promise that whatever your answers are, there's a set of skills that can be learned to make them possible. Maybe it's learning sexual techniques, understanding your own psychology, developing better communication, or mastering one of the dozens of other skills I teach. (And now you might be starting to realize why I focus so heavily on skills and write the way I do...)
Normally, in my articles, I tell you what something is before I tell you why it matters. Today, I thought it was more important to help you understand why this is worth your time. Now that you're oriented, let's dive into what learning really is.
Learning is the process by which we acquire new knowledge or skills, organize that information into memory, and retain it so it can be accessed and used later in real life.
The goal of learning is not simply the accumulation of knowledge. The goal is to understand, remember, and apply that knowledge in new situations, problems, and events you encounter throughout your life—a process known as transfer.
During learning, your brain moves information from short-term memory into long-term memory so it can be recalled later.
Short-term memory (working memory): The part of your mind where three to four groups of information can be consciously attended to at once. Information typically remains there for only about 30 seconds unless it is actively processed.
Long-term memory: The vast storehouse containing everything you've learned throughout your life—facts, words, concepts, images, procedures, and more.
Within the brain, learning occurs by forming connections between neurons, the basic building-block cells that make up your network of roughly 86 billion neurons. The connection point between two neurons is called a synapse. During learning, the axon of one neuron forms a connection with the dendritic spine of another.
Your working memory creates a network of links that are stored in long-term memory, allowing information to be more easily accessed later to solve problems and understand concepts. However, if too much information competes for your working memory at once, you reach your cognitive load.
When you recall information—consciously focusing on it and retrieving it from the web of knowledge you've previously built—signals travel between neurons across those synaptic connections.
The more you practice, the thicker and stronger those neural connections become through a process known as myelination. Learning complex information also creates larger, more robust networks of connections. The stronger and more interconnected those neural pathways become, the better you've learned something.
Specifically, we build two types of knowledge in long-term memory.
Declarative knowledge: Knowledge made up of facts, concepts, words, and images that requires focused attention while studying. As declarative knowledge is stored in long-term memory, individual facts become linked together into larger concepts, creating chunks of information that are easier to retrieve.
Procedural knowledge: Skills that involve a sequence of actions or steps repeated over time until they become automatic.
We often begin by learning declarative knowledge about a rule or process. With enough practice, that knowledge gradually becomes procedural.
As we create networks of connections in long-term memory, information becomes easier to remember because recalling one part of the network helps activate the rest.
Declarative memories are cross-referenced both directly and indirectly through other pieces of knowledge you already possess.
Procedural memories are typically triggered automatically when the appropriate conditions arise.
As you continue learning, you discover new connections and distinctions between concepts, linking even larger networks of neurons together as you move toward mastery of a skill.
I've written hundreds of articles at this point, and if you haven't noticed yet, they all follow a similar pattern: what something is, why it's important, and how to do it.
That pattern isn't an accident. It's one of the oldest and simplest approaches to learning, and it's also remarkably effective.
It's based on the classical education method known as the trivium, which breaks learning into three stages:
In other words, you first learn what something is. Then you learn why it matters and how it connects to other concepts. Finally, you learn how to apply it creatively to express your ideas and accomplish your goals.
When I previously built a small educational nonprofit, I developed a learning framework based on the trivium that can be used to develop virtually any skill.
The reason this framework works is that it mirrors the neurobiological learning process we discussed earlier. First, you learn a simple concept and activate a small group of neurons. As you build on those concepts and connect them to one another, you create larger networks of neural connections. Then, as you repeatedly recall and apply that information in real life, those neural pathways become stronger.
The learning process we'll follow looks like this:
Let's walk through each of these steps using the example of learning rope bondage. Along the way, I'll sprinkle in a few evidence-based learning techniques that will help you get the most out of each stage of the process.
Most of the time, when someone sets out to learn something, they ask someone for advice, find a book, or watch a video, and then jump right in. The problem with this approach is that if the resource isn't very good—or simply doesn't fit your learning style—you're much more likely to give up before you learn anything truly useful.
Creating a plan, also known as metacognition (thinking about your thinking), helps you consider the best way to approach a problem and which learning strategies will be most effective. Psychologist Peter Gollwitzer discovered that having a strong desire to reach a goal isn't enough. What's necessary is a plan for when, where, and how you'll pursue your goal, as well as how you'll respond when obstacles inevitably arise.
The benefits of creating a learning plan include:
Creating a learning plan takes time and effort, but the investment pays off. As a general rule, spend about 10% of your total expected learning time researching and developing your plan before you begin practicing.
Whenever we begin learning something new, we first need to establish why we're learning it. That purpose is what keeps us motivated when the inevitable challenges arise. Unlike school, where motivation often comes from external pressures, self-directed learning requires you to tap into intrinsic motivation.
According to self-determination theory, intrinsic motivation has three primary drivers:
If you examine why you want to learn a particular topic or skill, you'll likely find that one or more of these needs is driving you.
For example, you might want to learn rope bondage because you love the intricacy of knots and ties and want to master the craft. Or perhaps you find it incredibly erotic and want to restrain your partner safely and skillfully. Maybe you want to tie yourself so you can explore BDSM without a partner, or you're looking for a unique shared experience that helps you connect more deeply with future partners.
Start by asking yourself:
If your goal is creating beautiful photographs, your learning might focus on decorative ties and perfect knot execution. If your goal is creating immersive, emotionally connective experiences, you might spend more time learning the flow of a rope scene than mastering complicated ties. If your goal is restraining movement during sex, you may focus primarily on utility ties.
Your goal determines which skills matter most.
If you're not sure which skills will help you achieve your goal, research them online—or, better yet, ask someone who has already accomplished what you're trying to do.
Now that you know which skills you need to learn, you can begin finding the resources that will help you develop them.
Depending on the skill, those resources might include:
For rope bondage, for example, these are some of the resources I've used:
One of the most important parts of creating a learning plan is deciding when you're actually going to learn and practice.
By scheduling dedicated learning sessions, you reduce procrastination—the tendency to never actually get started. When time is intentionally blocked off for learning, you're far less likely to let something else steal your attention.
Research suggests that about 90 minutes is the longest period most people can maintain intense focus while learning. After that, you'll benefit from taking a break. During those periods of rest, your brain continues processing and consolidating what you learned during the session.
Decide:
Then put it on your calendar.
For example, you might schedule a 90-minute rope study and practice session every weekend or attend a weekly rope workshop.
Not everyone has the luxury of setting aside dedicated learning time. When that's the case, make your learning materials as accessible as possible so you can take advantage of the small moments between other activities.
For example, I always keep audiobooks on my phone so I can listen while cooking. I have Kindle books ready to read when I'm relaxing instead of scrolling social media. I even keep my rope bag next to my desk, and sometimes I'll pick up a piece of rope just to practice for a few minutes between tasks.
One of the biggest factors in accelerating your learning is joining a community of people who are dedicated to mastering the same skill—or finding a mentor who can give you direct feedback on your progress.
This accomplishes two things.
First, it provides external motivation through social connection and a healthy degree of accountability.
Second, it gives you regular feedback on your performance so you can correct mistakes early instead of reinforcing bad habits that you'll eventually have to unlearn.

Now that we have our plan, our learning journey begins with the Explore phase, where we learn the fundamentals—the foundational concepts and base knowledge that everything else will build upon.
The primary goal at this stage is to get your feet wet and develop a hands-on feel for the skill or topic you're learning. If you remember the trivium from earlier, this stage corresponds to the grammar of a subject, answering the questions of who, what, where, and when.
Foundational knowledge is the knowledge from which all other understanding grows. It consists of the basic building blocks and core principles you'll use over and over again as your skills develop.
In rope bondage, that often means learning:
Learning the fundamentals first gives you a framework to attach new information to, allowing an organized mental structure to develop over time. Learning is far more effective when you begin with the core concepts and gradually integrate new material as your understanding expands.
In rope bondage, almost every tie you'll learn is a variation or combination of single-column ties, double-column ties, and frictions. These are the fundamental building blocks that appear repeatedly, even in highly complex ties. Mastering them first makes every advanced technique easier to learn later.
Learning foundational knowledge first also improves transfer—your ability to apply a skill learned in one context to an entirely new situation. The key to transfer is learning to distinguish between the surface characteristics of a situation and its underlying principles. The deeper principles tell you which knowledge should transfer to the problem you're facing.
For example, many rope ties begin with a single-column tie. Later, when you learn a hojo cuff, you'll discover that it's essentially another single-column tie applied in a different context—this time in the middle of the rope instead of at the end. It's the same underlying skill used in a new situation.
To begin your exploration:
Active recall is the process of pulling knowledge from your own memory or recreating something you've previously learned rather than looking it up. The more mental effort you put into recalling information—and the more varied the contexts in which you recall it—the stronger and more interconnected your neural pathways become.
When you actively work with material through techniques like active recall, you're encouraging new dendritic spines to form and connect with the axons of other neurons, creating new neural pathways. Simply rereading or passively glancing over material does little to encourage those new connections.
Another major benefit of active recall is that it combats the illusion of knowing. We are notoriously bad at judging whether we've actually learned something. With active recall, the answer becomes obvious—you either know it, or you don't.
In our rope bondage example, you might watch a video demonstrating a single-column tie and then, without replaying it, attempt to tie it entirely from memory. Or you might study the major nerve pathways and then trace them on your own body without looking back at the source material.
Interleaving is the practice of mixing different types of tasks, problems, or topics together during study and practice. Also known as mixed practice, interleaving helps you not only learn individual concepts but also understand how those concepts differ from one another.
When you're studying foundational material, alternating between different concepts creates more connections to your existing knowledge, giving your brain additional pathways for retrieving information later.
Research also suggests that interleaving improves your ability to choose the correct strategy when solving complex problems because you become better at recognizing the similarities and differences between different approaches.
Interleaving can be used in several ways.
If you're studying concepts within the same subject, rotate between them during a study session instead of spending too much time on any one concept. Then, in later study sessions, revisit those concepts in different orders while intentionally looking for connections between them.
For example, instead of practicing a single tie repeatedly, practice several different ties. Later, perform those same ties in different sequences, from different angles, or in different situations.
If you're studying multiple related subjects, try cross-pollination (sometimes called skill stacking) by learning complementary topics at the same time. It may feel chaotic at first, but it helps your brain connect ideas across disciplines into one integrated skill set.
For example, while learning rope bondage, you might also study scene design, negotiation, or BDSM psychology. Over time, you'll begin to understand how your physical technique with rope shapes your partner's emotional and psychological experience.
Finally, if you're struggling to understand a topic, try what I call brute-force learning. Instead of relying on a single resource, intentionally interleave multiple books, videos, instructors, and teaching styles that cover the same concept. Seeing the same idea explained from different perspectives gives your brain more opportunities to recognize the underlying principles.
For example, if you're learning a particular rope tie, watch several different instructors demonstrate it. Each will have a slightly different flow, different hand movements, different verbal cues, and different preferences for knots or frictions. Eventually, you'll find an approach that clicks with the way your brain learns.
Our learning journey now moves into the Engage phase, where we actively recall knowledge, practice skills, and participate in experiences that build relationships between foundational concepts.
The goal at this stage is to understand concepts on a deeper level. Your focus shifts from simply getting a feel for the topic to understanding how things work. As you do, you build progressively more accurate mental models that you can apply later. You learn not only how to perform a skill, but also why it is constructed the way it is.
In the trivium, this stage is known as logic, which answers the why of a subject by establishing meaningful relationships among facts and creating a systematic understanding of the whole.
In rope bondage, this is the point where you begin taking your foundational ties, knots, and frictions and combining them into more advanced ties such as a takate kote, futomomo, or chest harness.
Throughout this process, you're doing two things simultaneously. You're reinforcing the foundational skills through repeated practice while also learning how and why those foundations combine to create more elaborate ties.
One of the primary goals of this stage is to gradually embed knowledge into your long-term memory without losing what you've already learned.
According to Hermann Ebbinghaus's research on the Forgetting Curve, our memory naturally declines over time, with the steepest drop occurring shortly after learning. In many ways, our minds are like leaky buckets.
Psychologists have proposed several explanations for why we forget so much of what we initially learn:
One of the best ways to slow this natural forgetting is through active learning, which strengthens the synaptic connections between neurons. Active learning goes beyond simply reading or watching material. It requires you to actively recall information, practice skills, and apply what you've learned in meaningful ways.
That means whatever skill you're learning, you should intentionally create practice sessions and drills where you apply your knowledge instead of merely consuming more information.
In the kink and rope communities, rope labbing refers to structured, hands-on practice sessions where enthusiasts gather to refine technical ties, explore sensation, and experiment with new ideas without the pressure of running a full scene.
That same concept can be applied to almost any kink. In fact, I highly recommend creating dedicated practice sessions for activities that carry greater risk—such as erotic choking—so both partners can experiment, receive feedback, and build confidence in a low-stakes environment before incorporating those skills into a full scene.
Deliberate practice is a specific type of practice that is both purposeful and systematic. While ordinary practice often consists of mindless repetition, deliberate practice requires focused attention and is designed with the explicit goal of improving performance.
Research by Anders Ericsson found that deliberate practice has four essential elements:
Desirable difficulty—the principle that makes deliberate practice effective—is the process of working just beyond your current level of competence. According to research, practicing in this zone encourages your brain to strengthen existing neural pathways while forming new ones.
When choosing what to practice, identify the rate-determining step—the bottleneck that's limiting your overall progress. Improving this one component often increases the speed at which the rest of the skill develops.
For example, you might struggle with a futomomo because of a particular friction, body angle, or hand movement. Rather than practicing the entire tie repeatedly, create a drill that isolates and strengthens that specific component.
One approach I like is the Direct → Drill → Direct cycle:
Using our rope bondage example, imagine you're practicing a futomomo and discover that one particular friction keeps causing problems. Instead of repeatedly tying the entire futomomo, you isolate that friction and drill it until it becomes comfortable. You compare your work against a trusted example—or ask someone to critique it—and then return to practicing the complete tie.
An essential part of practice is feedback—receiving information about how your performance compares to the correct or desired execution of a skill. Feedback helps you recognize the gap between what you actually did and what you intended to do.
Feedback also plays a central role in Anders Ericsson's research on deliberate practice. He found that immediate feedback is one of the essential ingredients for reaching expert levels of performance. Without it, people often plateau, continuing to practice without making meaningful improvements—or sometimes even getting worse by reinforcing bad habits.
There are three types of feedback you should seek:
After receiving feedback, return to deliberate practice by focusing on the specific parts of the skill that need improvement before reintegrating them into the whole.
Spaced repetition is the practice of reviewing and testing material at progressively longer intervals. As the spacing between review sessions increases, recalling the information requires greater mental effort, strengthening long-term memory.
By allowing yourself to forget a little before each review session, spaced repetition makes retrieval more challenging—and research shows that this extra effort produces stronger, longer-lasting memories. Over time, you'll also encounter the same knowledge in different contexts, giving your brain more retrieval cues and making recall easier in the future.
To use spaced repetition:
For example, imagine you're practicing a futomomo, a takate kote, and an arm binder. You rate your confidence as follows:
Two days later, you spend most of your practice time on the futomomo. Three days later, you review the futomomo and takate kote. Five days later, you practice all three ties. Seven days later, you reassess your confidence levels. Maybe the futomomo still needs frequent practice, or perhaps you've discovered that the takate kote has become your weakest skill.
As your confidence changes, your review schedule changes with it. Over time, the stronger your memory becomes, the farther apart you can space your practice sessions while still retaining the skill.
Our learning journey now moves into the Execute phase, where the emphasis shifts to mastery—applying your skills to higher-level concepts, new contexts, and the creation of original work.
In the classical trivium, this stage is known as rhetoric, which focuses on how knowledge and understanding are applied.
You may have noticed that many of my articles transform knowledge into step-by-step procedures. One mistake traditional education often makes is failing to create opportunities for knowledge to be applied. Without application, neural connections are weaker, and you're much more likely to forget what you've learned.
Becoming an expert in a domain—or eventually a master—requires converting large amounts of declarative knowledge (facts and concepts) into procedural knowledge (automatic skills and actions).
In rope bondage, this is the point where you take the ties you've learned—built on foundational knots and frictions—and create your first complete rope scene. As your mastery grows, those scenes become increasingly complex, intentional, and immersive.
A true master isn't simply able to apply knowledge in the context where it was learned. They can transfer that knowledge into entirely new situations—a concept known as transfer. They use the underlying principles they've mastered to create new techniques, new experiences, and sometimes entirely new knowledge.
At that point, you understand the individual components so well that you may begin creating your own ties, teaching methods, or scene designs that are uniquely your own.
Proceduralization is the process of transforming declarative knowledge into procedures that become easier and more automatic each time you perform them.
When you're first learning, new neural connections are primarily stored through the declarative learning system, which works closely with your working memory. At this stage, you're consciously thinking through nearly every step.
With repeated practice, those same skills become encoded in the brain's procedural learning system. Instead of consciously remembering each step, your brain begins executing the procedure automatically.
Turning knowledge into efficient procedures allows you to think faster and with less effort, freeing your working memory to focus on more difficult problems rather than basic execution.
The general process of proceduralization looks like this:
Not every part of a skill becomes proceduralized to the same degree. Some components become almost effortless, while others still require conscious thought. The result is a blend of automatic habits and actively managed skills. Over time, the more frequently practiced components become remarkably durable, while the less-practiced ones remain more susceptible to forgetting.
In rope bondage, most common ties follow a predictable sequence of steps built from foundational knots and frictions. As you repeatedly practice those sequences, they become automatic, allowing your attention to shift away from how you're tying and toward why you're tying—creating an intentional emotional, psychological, and physical experience for your partner rather than simply executing the technique.
Once you've developed a solid foundation, it's time to begin experimenting. Experimentation is the process of applying your skills beyond the predetermined methods you originally learned.
There are three primary types of learning experiments:
As you approach mastery, continued progress becomes increasingly difficult. There are countless resources for beginners, but very few for people operating at an advanced level. Eventually, there comes a point where you can no longer rely on someone else's roadmap—you have to begin creating your own.
Experimentation allows you to apply your skills in novel situations.
Once you've mastered the fundamentals, improvement often slows. At that point, your challenge isn't simply solving problems you couldn't solve before. It's also learning to abandon stale, inefficient approaches in favor of better ones. A master doesn't just know how to solve a problem—they know the best way to solve it, adapting their approach to fit the situation with efficiency, elegance, and originality.
Here are five experiments you can try:
Copy, then create: Copy the work of a master, then use it as the foundation for creating something of your own. Copying simplifies experimentation because it gives you a proven starting point. To recreate someone else's work, you first have to deconstruct it and understand why it works. For example, learn someone else's chest harness and then design your own variation.
Compare methods side by side: Practice two different approaches while changing only one variable at a time. This helps you discover which techniques fit your goals and personal style. Solving the same problem in multiple ways also broadens your expertise. For example, learn the same chest harness from several instructors and compare their approaches.
Introduce new constraints: Create limitations that make your normal approach impossible. Constraints force you to develop new problem-solving strategies instead of becoming rigid in your habits. For example, tie with your non-dominant hand, tie from different positions, work under time pressure, or intentionally alternate between tying quickly and slowly.
Create hybrids: Combine two seemingly unrelated skills to develop something unique. Many of the greatest innovations come from blending disciplines that rarely intersect. What happens when you combine rope bondage with spanking? Or rope bondage with Tantra? Those combinations often produce entirely new experiences.
Explore the extremes: Push the boundaries of what you've previously done. Exploring the edges of a skill reveals possibilities you may never discover by staying in the middle. Naturally, these experiments should always remain within your negotiated risk profile and safety practices. You might explore how quickly you can complete a tie, how a tie changes with different levels of flexibility, or what happens when you dramatically increase the complexity of your knotwork.
Teaching forces you to organize your understanding into a form that someone else can understand. In doing so, you often discover the gaps in your own knowledge.
One of the best methods for doing this is the Feynman Technique:
Teaching is an incredible motivator. The moment you commit to explaining something to someone else, you're naturally driven to deepen your own understanding. Students ask unexpected questions, often exposing blind spots you didn't realize you had. In effect, you're recruiting other people to help identify the holes in your knowledge so you know exactly what to study next.
Teaching also helps protect against the Dunning-Kruger effect—the tendency for people with limited knowledge to overestimate their competence because they don't yet understand how much they don't know.
If you're teaching a concept, ask yourself:
How would I explain this to someone who has never encountered it before?
If you're teaching a procedure, explain not only how to perform it, but also why each step works.
Here are a few additional teaching strategies:
In rope bondage, you can begin teaching long before you become a master. Start by teaching a single knot or foundational tie to another person. Teaching even one small concept will reveal what you truly understand—and what still needs work.
